Report

Report: First division squash returned to Warrington after the Christmas break, and it started with a bang!

The crowd was tremendous with well over 100 people in the arena excited to see some world class squash again.

The evening started with 2 very interesting match-ups: World No.18, Emily Whitlock playing her boyfriend Matt Wagg (!!), and Andy Whipp playing unknown Kuwaiti Bader Almaghrebi.

Emily definitely had the psychological edge against boyfriend Matt, winning a comfortable enough 3-0. I think all us men can agree that was probably the best result for all parties - always keep your nice lady happy!

On the show court it was obvious from the knock-up that Bader was a very good player. He looked keen and aggressive - oh to be 19 again! Racing to a 5-2 lead in the first game everyone could see the established and experienced Whippy had a real match on his hands. Andy had to use all his accuracy and determination to keep the young Kuwaiti at bay, winning an extremely entertaining 3-0. Definitely watch out for Bader - he's going to prove extremely tough to beat and be a real asset for The Northern.

Next up was Carlton Oldham vs Manchester Uni student Josh Morris, and no.2's on the main court, Ben Smith vs Josh Taylor.

Carlton and Josh Morris both seemed capable to play a sublime rally followed by a terrible rally! After many (many) swings in concentration, Carlton had the overall superior quality and fitness to win 3-1, but The Northern had their first point on the board. They had lost the match now but could they build on that point..... unfortunately for them - no!

Ben Smith is a class act. This was always going to be tough for Josh Taylor. Ben used his height to dominate the middle of the court, keeping his opponent pinned behind him, before demonstrating to the crowd his array of skills with lovely rally-winning drops shots. Ben is improving quickly and I expect he will continue to do so. Now supported by Warrington team sponsor Edge Worldwide Logistics (EWL) he will be more able to make his mark on the professional world circuit.

Finally we were treated to UK No.1 and World No.8, Joel Makin taking on British Junior No.2, Finnlay Withington. This was an incredibly entertaining match with Finn showing amazing skills and reactions. There was rarely a "conventional rally" as most points were quick-fire and explosive with some amazing attacks and retrievals. Everyone came away impressed with Finn's ability. Joel won 3-0 to cap a great evening for The Warrington Crew. 20 more points to extend our lead at the top of the table.

Next Tuesday Warrington are at home again and host new-comers Bollington, with super-stars James Willstrop and Ben Smith on hand to entertain the crowds. Anyone is welcome to enjoy our impressive show court and array of fine beers!
