Report

Report: A buoyant Whitby trying to see back to back wins for the first time in 2026 play host to local rivals Mollington. With the vandalism of our courts sorted, some plastering work completed and new heaters installed, our courts are looking good let hope the squash do them justice.

Prompt start for John and Nathan but it was Nathan who hit the ground running whilst John struggled to find his feet, Nathan taking a commanding lead before John finally got going and pegged him back. Unfortunately, the damage was done and despite forcing a tie break Nathan stayed on top and took the 1st game. After a quick shake of the head John had found his rhythm and took charge of the rallies keeping the ball at the back and tight down the lines. Nathan seeing his arse with the marker didn’t help him in his attempts to get back in the match and subsequently John breezed through for a healthy 3-1 win and first blood to Whitby.

Next up we were delighted to have Joe back on court after a lengthy absence, it was like he’s never been away. Was always going to be a big ask taking on a in form James who can run and rally till the cows come home but Joe stayed with him and then some taking a 2-1 lead before having a strategic breather in the 4th. So, deciding 5th set and Joe cross courting the ball brilliantly made James do all the running. Joe got himself in A1 position at 10-7 serving for the match and the balcony was roaring him over the line. Mollington however brought their own fans with them and James had just as much support and never gave up fighting for every ball and causing Joe to hit one too many tins and the comeback was on. Fair play to James for not stopping all match and had more in the tank at the death saving 4 match balls before sealing his own victory. Unbelievable effort from Joe all things considered let’s hope it’s something to build on going forward.

After scrapping through last week Hemmo was determined to regain his good form and standing in his way was a very tricky left hander in Steve. All the extra training through the week seemed to pay off as Hemmo hit the ground running and wasted no time taking the first game with ease. More of a fight back from Steve in the second making Hemmo work for it and eventually in the 3rd Steve got his reward as Hemmo failed to find the all allusive drop shot. Some amazing rallies in the 4th game which could have gone either way but thankfully it was Hemmo who was more clinical and came out on top in the tie break.

So, 2-1 on the night and then what seemed like a lifetime waiting for the rest of the Mollington team to arrive before finally Marc showed up to take on Charlie. The last time these 2 met Charlie didn’t have enough blood in his alcohol stream and was still haunted by the stag do in Poland. Today was going to be different and Marc was going to be on the end of it. There was no complacency in the first game an absolute ruthless Charlie went to work and punished Marc for his punctuality. In the 2nd game Charlie extended all the rallies and worked the legs of Marc maybe a bit too much at times before closing out the game. A bit more ruthlessness in the 3rd with both men starting to tire but Charlie dominated the tee throughout and was always in the right position to take the winning shots and put the match to bed 3-0.

So Whitby finally with back to back wins and all that was left was to watch Fletch take on Gareth. Easy work for Fletch who was getting annoyed with his losing streak and had a point to prove (only to himself). Despite a bit of come back in the 3rd from Gareth, Fletch dominated the tie and kept his composure in the tie break to earn a very accomplished 3-0 win on the night.

Only thing left to do now was get into the bar for beers and food and let out designated head of recruitment Mike persuade the Mollington boys to jump ship and set up a 3rd Whitby team. 😊 Lets face it why wouldn’t you, we have the best bar, the best courts, the best people and now the best food I repeat, we have the best bar, the best courts, the best people and now the best food and one more time we have the best bar, the best courts, the best people and now the best food and just in case you didn’t hear him the 3rd time we have the best bar, the best courts, the best people and now the best food.
