Report

Report:Mid table clash tonight @ Whitby but the squash was anything but mediocre.

Barnton CC the visitors and prompt start for Joe v Paul. Mr Smith flew out the gates on this one and took the game to Joe putting him on the back foot. Joe responded with a brutal take down of his opponent controlling everything on court from the front to the back Left and Right, didn’t give him an inch only a tasty bagel in the 3rd to enjoy before putting the match to bed and getting the early points on the board for Whitby, Well Played Joe, you just need to improve your bar game now haha.

Next up was glutting for punishment John Ham v the returning Iain. John struggling with form and confidence has called upon old faithful Andy for some coaching which seemed to be working in the first game. Patient play and keeping the ball tight down the lines until the opportunity presented itself was working well and first blood to John. If only it could stay that way ☹ Unfortunately eagerness took over and cheap points were on offer for Iain who gladly took them and pilled the pressure on John who couldn’t find an answer before the unthinkable happened ☹ yes, the bakery came knocking for El Capitan. His first NWCS bagel was reluctantly handed to John to rub salt into his already gapping wounds. With any momentum from the 1st game completely gone Iain continued to play the more sensible and accurate squash and finished John of squaring the match 1-1 on the night. The only way is up John, or is it ?☹

Next up is the inform Fletch v the seasoned pro Chris Sharpes. Chris wasted no time pilling the pressure on Fletch making use of front court boasts every time Fletch sat deep taking an early lead. Fletch never the one to go down without a fight stepped up and kept the ball alive and at the back of the court forcing Chris into hail Mary boasts that weren’t paying off as he hoped and got Fletch well and truly back in the match at 1-1. Some of the longest rallies of the night ensued as Chris struggled to kill the ball and Fletch constantly recovering from impossible positions, unfortunately Chris had enough good shot in him to put the ball too wide for even The Eagles long reach and the match went to Chris who handing Fletch what is now a rare defeat for him and tipped the scales in Barntons favour 2-1 on the night.

4th match up of the night was quite possibly the best as the ever eager to play Hemmo faced James ( I like his hoovers) Dyson. Right from the off both players showed the crowd that this was going to be a proper slog on court neither one giving an inch to the other and fighting hard for every point. James sending the ball to all corners of the court and Hemmo taking them out of the air superbly you couldn’t call it. Tie break in the first set the tone and James hoovered up the first points of the match. Hemmo was more like a Henry hoover as he picked up anything in the 2nd and moved around court like a cordless made sure he was still in the match taking the second game more convincingly before a fight back from Dyson in the 3rd . Energy levels were running low now and a must win game for Hemmo produced yet another tie break and defended a match point to edge out James and take it down to the wire. All on the line in the final game and it’s a case of who wants it more? Henry Hoover will always out perform the fancy Dyson such was the case tonight with Hemmo calling on his reserves and James completely spent of energy Whitby levelled the tie to give us a fighting chance in the 5th and deciding match of the night. Great match from both players there.

So as has been the way so many times for Whitby we call upon the talents of our talisman Charlie to do the business against a very up for it Robbie Blair. Off to a flyer for Charlie who got to grips with the tempo of the game quicker than Robbie who seemed like the occasion was getting to him and he couldn’t get into the swing of things handing Charlie a comfortable early 1st game. This was never going to be the case in the next game as Robbie came back fighting and the balcony was awarded with a brilliant game of squash to watch. Both players hitting the ball solidly to the back and retrieving well at the front with Charlie losing the tempo slightly before regaining control and making the fewer mistakes (there wasn’t many from either) to take the 2nd as well. Rallies were lasting longer and energy levels with dropping for Charlie who had to dig deep to stay in the 3rd game. The home balcony as ever doing its bit to roar Charlie on which seemed to effect Robbie more as he came down with an unexpected dose of Tourette’s blurring out funny noises of his own. I think that was his way of telling his own team mates to voice up but it was all quiet on the away side and only getting louder on the home end as Robbie ended up being his own cheerleader. With that distraction on his mind it was left to Charlie to focus on the match and do the business on court which he did, stepping up and raising his game to give Whitby the win on the night and very valuable bonus points. Great effort Robbie, if you played for us you’d never have to cheer yourself on mate 😊.

So down to the bar for well-deserved Chinese and plenty of pints to replace the burnt calories and looking forward to the return fixture and your famous Indian take away. Until next time Barton.
