Report

Report:Well it may not be Halloween just yet but it was a nightmare at Whitby as we play host to Chester Rugby 2.

On a night that was always going to be tough, Whitby also had to contend with a tsunami of absentees for various reasons.

Firstly, Paul “I never miss a Thursday” Hemmings was off Salmon fishing with his wife in Cabo Verde.

Joe gave himself a back injury whilst picking up his wallet.

Shaun taking a break to give his heart some R&R after seeing his points plummet the last few weeks.

It was thin on the ground against one of this season title contenders but on we go.

Up first was our best chance of getting any points on the board Charlie v Kieran. Unbelievably tight match up this and best of the night, nothing between them after the first 2 games at 1-1 before Kieran started to turn the screw and take the 3rd. Big fight back from Charlie in the 4th and was very unlucky not to nick it and send it to a 5th game but Kieran was able to pinch the tie break and secure all 3 points.

Next on was an old MBNA ladder match up, John v Gaz. John, finally with a weeks training under his belt was looking forward to getting his season up and running however #2 v Chester 2 was always going to be too much too soon and Gaz wasted no time demonstrating this. Far too many tins from John gifting Gaz points he didn’t need as he played the lengths and widths well and stayed patient to seal an easy win on the night. 2-0 and its only 7:30.

Stepping up once again for the first team was Mike v Tony. Tough ask of Mike as a very agile Tony didn’t waste any time getting into his stride and dominating the tee as Mike tried to play Div 3 standard squash to no avail. 1-0 down. Quick reset by Mike who realised his strength is playing his own style of squash and started to bamboozle Tony and took the game to the wire just coming up sort. Unfortunately, that valiant effort took a lot out of Mike, and Tony made sure he wouldn’t be caught off guard again, extending the rallies till Mike had nothing left in the tank taking the match and giving Chester the inevitable bonus points.

In our time of need we were lucky to be able to call upon our very own marine Dave who took on Jon. On court this looked like quite an even match up with long rallies and great pick ups by both players. Half a chance for Dave to get some points on the board for Whitby surely. Not if Jon has anything to do about it. His never give up a point attitude took the wind out of Dave’s sails and a game on the card was a bridge too far for Dave despite his great efforts for his beloved Whitby. Nice of Dave’s missues to make the journey up north to honour the Whitby losing code 😊.

So last match of the night and our final slimmer of hope rested on our inform Fletch, hoping to make it 3 wins this season v’s Dave. Fletch’s max effort is the min requirement attitude and his eagle esq reach is so good to watch and so frustrating for his opponents. Dave was throwing everything at him and played his part in the longest rallies of the night. All looked even in the first but someone had to pip it and unfortunately it was Dave. Similar trend over the next 2 games, retrieval after retrieval and long gasps, propping themselves up by the wall after the points were won and lost due to exhaustion, great for the balcony observers but like the previous matches before, this Chester team was just too good and had what it takes to get the job done.

So 5-0 on the night and the Whitby boys all bent over with their shorts down whilst Chester dry bummed us like a stream train, could only find solace with the now standard Chinese buffet on offer at the bar. Bad night on court but good night in the bar with the Chester lads, well played. Hopefully our absentees will be back for the return fixture but I think we might all be on holiday when its time to play your first team ☹.
