| Report: | So the final match of the hardest summer league we’ve ever had arrives and its Whitby entertaining the lads from Barnton. None of us are really in this for the squash are we!
First up is John v Matt and surprisingly it was a close encounter in the first game before Matt quickly stepped into gear in the 2nd and tore me a new one, I was lucky to get 2 points. The 3rd was pretty standard going for Matt who saw the game out 3-0 and earned his drink !
Up next and fresh off his stellar performance against Toby was Steve v Jim. Jim was on it straight out of the blocks and playing some very good squash taking the 1st comfortably before Steve stepped up his game and just coming up short in the tie break. Jim continued to impress with some very smart shot choices and closed the game out 3-0.
Next up Dave Snape v Ste Spedding, Ste having to go the extra mile to win the points as Dave refused to give up on lost causes and ran himself into the ground playing a ridiculously good retrieval game. Ste’s quality shone through in the end to take the match 3-0 but it was an epic effort by Dave.
Next was the father of the house Bob v Uche, Bob rolling back the years got into his stride quickly and even when the game dragged on into a tie break found enough in him to get over the line and let his racket skills shine to see out a comfortable 3-0 win finally for the Whitby boys.
Last on court and straight from the boozer was Whitby’s new summer signing Paul Fletcher who’s fitted in already with our ways in the bar he’s one of us already! David trying to spoil Paul’s night on the court failed to get any traction and Paul proved too good for him to make the scorecard look more respectable. Imagine what he can play like when he’s sober !
So that’s it, summer of ’24 is over and just a few weeks left before the real season starts and my liver begins to fail! Well played to Barnton it was great having you hope you enjoyed the Pizza a beers as much as the squash and good luck in the new season.
