Report: | Week 3 of Summer league for Whitby and it’s heating up on court making the balls warmer and the squash balls even hotter still with temps that keep them bouncing and the rallies going on for longer. Someone needs to invent a 3 dot.
Our guests tonight are the funnier half of Warrington’s summer contingent and up on court first is the ever prompt (he got the message this time) Pat v Dave who after the other week left his plus 1 at home and it was a good job he did in the end. Despite Dave taking an early lead and having full control of the tie with a demolishing 15-3 2nd game he left the door open for Pat who got a 2nd wind and went flat out in the 3rd and somehow managed to bamboozle Dave who couldn’t get back in his stride and ultimately lost the match 3-2.
Next up is our ever erratic Johnny who acts like a pinball machine bouncing of every wall sometimes hitting a squash ball in the process. One thing has to be said about him though is that he never gives up and if you want to beat him you’re going to have to dig deep and he pulled of some amazing returns none better than his graceful flying through the air shot arms stretched trying to save the match, imagine Mary Poppins with a squash racket. Unfortunately Rob held his nerve and finally was able to put him to bed for a 3-0 win.
Next is our ever improving Luke v Pete. Great game to watch with Pete taking an early deserved lead but Luke fighting back in the 3rd with much better serves and a game plan gave Pete something to think about, his heart perhaps! As the game went on and the rallies extended Pete was struggling for fitness in the heat and it seemed a remarkable comeback was on the cards, a tie break in the 4th meant the match was poised on a knifes edge and my money was on the youthful Luke. However it was not to be with experience paying dividends Pete was able to crawl over the line to take the match. Great fun to watch all the same very unlucky Luke.
On the other court was Hembo as ever dying for a pint and pretty boy Anjo (that’s what his mates call him anyway). Hembo very unlucky in the 1st game could have won and showed why in the 2nd with a convincing display. Anjo turned up then and took the game to Hembo who was running on empty and couldn’t stop the inevitable victory for Anjo taking the tie 3-1 and the match 4-0 to Warrington. Is a clean swipe of the board on the cards.
Up steps John v Stew for a battle royal. John started off solid with a convincing lead of 10-2 but must have forgot we’re playing to 15 for some reason and allowed Stew to fight back to force a tie break in the first. Not what was planned at all. Luckily John scrapped the first game but completely lost his rhythm and found himself scrapping for points against a more accomplished Stew who went on to take a 2-1 lead. Realising this would mean a clean slate against his beloved Whitby John put on his big boy pants and had a word with himself, NOT TODAY! Snapping out of his rut John came back into the match with tighter better shots and putting the pressure on Stew who started to finally make some mistakes. After an epic battle John finally brought it home and saved Whitby’s blushes.
Great match between 2 great teams and sets of lads, back to bar for pizza beers and nice bottle of Melbec! Great night ensued, Warrington you’s are great company look forward to the reverse fixture.
