Report

Report:So, like myself the 2025/26 season is over the hill as we pick it up again for the 2nd half of the season, let’s hope it’s not all downhill from here for the Whitby boys after their decent first half.

A very depleted Whitby side play host to one pie per person Neston 3.
Up first was John taking on Matt Styles not that he was taking him on much. Matt took charge of this one from the off, finding all the all corners whilst John was finding the tin. He dominated the tee and was taking the ball very early. All John could do was get into retrieval mode but to no avail. A few good rallies and a half-arsed fight back in the 3rd game was all John could muster and the match was over faster than the warm up. 1-0 Neston.

Next on was Mike who loves grassing his mates up in the bar when they bring their own wine in v James and the best match of the night by far. Mikes killer serves set the tone for the game making James have to volley everything and kept him off the tee. His wide cross courts proved very effective and despite James fitness advantage this wasn’t enough to prevent Mike taking a justified 2-0 lead. A bit of loss of focus followed for Mike and some contentious ask from a man who not only grassed his mate up expected his opponent to grass himself up with a dodgy pick up. Things started to go James way and Mike despite his new-found fitness levels was struggling to keep up, James tying up the match 2-2. If there’s ever a man who fight till the end its Mike and he played a blinder, like a proper snake in the grass he came out of nowhere to pull off his greatest win in the north west counties league and gave Whitby a very much needed 3 points on the board making it 1-1 on the night.

Next up is Fletch v Joss. A bit like John v Matt this was a very one-sided match with Josh dominating the play and fletch struggling to get the ball past the half way line. Joss’s pick ups and drops where too neat and quick for Fletch to do anything about them and the tempo was 100 mph before we all knew the match had started it was over and Neston were 2-1 up on the night.

The 4th match of the night was between an injured Dave v a returning Colin. Colin hadn’t played for quite some time but you would never have known watching him hit the ball. Decent rallies throughout and Dave working that back of his hard was managing to keep himself in the games with Colin just keeping himself ahead and using his holding abilities to devastating effect was able to prove too much for Dave and in the 3rd game Dave found himself forcing his shots a bit too much and making the mistakes that Colin wasn’t ultimately handing him the match. So 3-1 and bonus points to Neston.

Last up and hopefully to give Whitby a bit of pride back was Charlie taking on James. Charlie flew out the gates in this one and dealt with anything James could through at him. A comfortable 1st game for Charlie but James was never going to go down without a fight. The next 2 games were a far closer encounter and the rallies was a joy for the balcony to watch. Plenty of hard hitting to the back of the court but it was the front were the match would be won with Charlie positioning himself better than james and giving himself more time for every shot which paid off as he seen the match out 3-0.

So 3-2 on the night but it wasn’t really a close fixture, Neston were far the better team and its starting to look like stormy weather ahead for Whitby and what better grub to have for it than some homemade scouse and a cheeseboard washed down by bottles of Rioja an some smuggled in Chianti that tell tale Mike pointed out to the bar staff, shocking behaviour that mike and a Whitby Squash Social Committee meeting will be held once Hemmo returns. Big shout out to Pip for the food Charlie, it was delicious.
