Report

Report:Whitby boys making all the noise tonight as we host the Prawn Sandwich brigade aka Tattenhall.
Whitby, depleted with injuries and absentees was feeling apprehensive about tonight knowing the possibilities Tattenhall have at their disposal, however, it was Tattenhall who fielding a weaken side with Fred being their only upcoming superstar in the team.

Straight to business for the inform Hemmo up against Mark and no time was wasted stamping his authority on the match with an impressive 11-3 start. It wasn’t going to be all one way however as Mark pushed back and kept retrieving the ball clawing 1 back. Hemmo thought this was in the bag but Mark was having none of that and took the games to the wire. Hemmo was struggling and his missus was letting the whole balcony know her poor precious hubby has been suffering with a little cold of late (escuses, excuses), and Mark was feeling good being 7-2 in the 4th. Here we go again, up steps the infamous Whitby balcony even Joe stopped scoring his match to play his part. Think Bethpage Black with a little less USAism. Hemmo fed of this & rallied back superbly and Mark not knowing what was happening could do nothing to stop it as Hemmo took the match 3-1, well played, now lots of rest and fluids pumpkin.

Next on and stepping up for us was Mike v grass em up Graham 😊. This ones personal Mike! Great start for our club’s sponsor, playing his deaf touch drops from the back and putting in a proper shift with his movement. He would have been up by bigger margins had he not allowed quite a few mistakes to creep in and Graham took full advantage, however, Mike was able to hang on both times giving himself a comfortable 2-0 lead. Graham was never going to give up easily and started rallying down the lines more and playing perfectly timed lobs getting himself well and truly back in it and tying the match 2-2. Mike was struggling after putting in a proper shift, his hamstring couldn’t take much more and Graham’s game was only getting stronger. Ultimately it was too much on the night. Great effort by Mike and an important 2 points on the board for Whitby but spoils go to Graham, well played. 1-1 on the night now.

Up steps Whitby’s #1 Charlie taking on the ever-improving Fred. Charlie wanting to get into the game, extending the rallies rather than take the winner, probably showed too much to Fred who’s retrieving was sensational at times and took Charlie to the wire in the first game. Charlie remained patient and upped the tempo and pace on the ball. As good as he is this was too much for Fred to keep up with. No bed time story of Pip for Fred tonight and a comfortable 3-0 win for Charlie giving Whitby a 2-1 lead.

Over to Joe who was still licking his wounds from last week and was hoping for a pick me up against Craig. Wow, brutal performance from Joe who didn’t put a foot wrong, bad timing for Craig to be on the end of Joe letting out all his frustration from last week and despite Joe taking the foot off the gas a bit in the second game, Craig couldn’t find an answer to Joes widths, lengths, drops or drives giving Whitby’s first bagel of the season and sealing the bonus points, absolutely ruthless Joe.

With Whitby suffering from a growing injury list and Fletch still learning we don’t book things in on Thursday nights, it was fortunate that we could rely on our very own hoffmeister to step in against North West Counties legend Willo. Dave looked like he never left in the first and absolutely dominated the court and taking the first game quite comfortably. Those of us who know Willo however knew that he was just warming up and came back strong in the 2nd game using his wrists and knowhow to take the tiebreak and level the match. Dave didn’t let up however and made sure he stayed in front of Willo with some great pick ups and using the widths well he was able to withstand whatever Willo threw at him and got all 3 points in the bag for Whitby. Let’s hope we can see more or him over the season.

So, despite some injuries and setbacks it’s a good start to the season for Whitby. Time to head to the bar for both a Chinese and Italian Pizza & to enjoy Tattenhall’s company. Great to have you’s over, good banter as always and looking forward to the return fixture.
I Probably should have gone home earlier, sore head today and woke up next to half a dozen rackets and some cake, does anyone know who they belong too? Cakes mine though😊!
