Report

Report: Another one of those Whitby Boys Magical Mystery Tour jobs today and the destination was some obscure place south of the border, good job we all remembered our passports and border patrol didn’t find all the pots and pans Charlie had stashed in the chassis of the Fun Bus. Early pickups including a hippy hitchhiker and off we go.

First on and in front of some traveling dwarf cheerleader friends who came out to support him was John v young Joshua. Straight off the bat John could tell this was going to be hard work as Josh being slim and agile with youth on his side wanted to keep the ball hot and fast and run his arse off which normally suits John to the ground but not today. Struggling to keep up and without a half decent drop shot in his bag, John found himself 1-0 down and suffering in front of his adoring fans. Not one to go down without a fight John found another gear and got his drives a bit tighter to apply some pressure on Josh and managed to take the 2nd game to make it 1-1. Tit for Tat over the next 2 games with Josh using his pace to retrieve and John using his lobs to gain position we tied the match 2-2 to take it down to the wire. Josh was still running ragged with no sign of tiredness creeping in whilst John was using every trick in the book for some respite, “which side ref, what’s the score ref?, Who too ref?” I knew all those answers before I asked. Meanwhile Josh, who was easily the best player on show from Crewe of the night, is doing laps of the court waiting for me to serve it. As you can imagine youth prevailed in the tie break and John went to drown his sorrows with his friends who were only happy to turn the screw and take the piss out of me for losing, who needs enemies ey.

Next up was Hembo v David. Hembo Won, the end.

So 1 a piece and up steps Matt stepping in for the missing Joe who puts a romantic trip with the missus in Rome ahead of his team mates. He’s got a lot to learn about the Whitby Way. Matt found himself up against an energetic Adam who played some brilliant squash at times, far better than the bloke Crewe put in at #2. Matt played some great squash at times and at 1-1 it looked like we had chance. Matt had crowd cheering him on making it look like he was the home player something Adam pointed out to his own fans who started to finally respond after he won the tie break to make it 2-1. They only sing when they’re winning. Back at it in the 4th game with Adam covering the court very well and Matt struggling to turn, it goes down to the 3rd tie break of the match. Unfortunately for Matt, Adam was just that little bit better on the night and got over the line to make it 2-1 and twitch bum time for the Whitby boys who was watching their slender lead at the top of the table wither away.

When you need him most up steps the Banker Charlie v Mr Anderson. Charlie being in charge of transport tonight didn’t want a moody, quiet, sombre trip home, it’s called the Fun Bus for a reason, so he, as usual, played his 2nd gear sensible high percentage squash forcing his opponent to make all the mistakes and sending him to each corner of the court making light work of the tie and earning his 0% alcoholic beverage and setting up a belter finish at 2-2 on the night going into the last.

Final showing of the night up steps Marc all the way from South Africa to face our very own Ray Charles who was still trying to open his eyes. What a start to the match this was with Marc dominating play whilst Shaun looks around for his racket. Finally, at 10-4 down Shaun opens his eyes and starts playing and unbelievably takes the game to a tie break and comes away with the first blow. Marc feeling shocked raised the ante in the next game and kept Shaun out of position playing the drops when needed and the lengths at the right time and tied the match 1-1. Shaun now with his supporters back from the showers, rallied and found his swagger to pull of some amazing nip and tuck squash to get his head in front and make it 2-1 before Marc again refused to go down without a fight and made it 2-2. So, here we are, 2 matches each and 2-2 in the final game. The bonus points looked worryingly out of reach but Shaun’s eyes seemed to clear up and the confidence he was getting from the crowd getting louder and louder with every point he won seemed to energise his body to get forward and cover more court than I’ve ever seem him do all season and he played an absolute Blinder (no pun intended) to pull off the heist of the season for Whitby and bailing out his captain no end who rewarded him in the showers later on.

Whitby reap the rewards and maintain their top spot going into their last home tie of the season next week. Stew and cheeseboard back in the bar from our hosts who were unlucky on the night before we jump back into the Fun Bus beers in hand and a black light so we knew where not to sit, it’s a fun bus for us but a shagging wagon for Charlie. All’s well that ends well but no more slip ups Captain ☹ !
