Report: | Evening all and it’s off to Whitby we go for the travelling Neston who’ve had a hard run in the start of the season but the face a Whitby without their talisman Charlie who’s enjoying all that New York and his New Wife has to offer him, I know he’ll be reading this from afar!
Simon for Neston arriving early and wanting to get going left Hembo Gutted he couldn’t go on first so up was John after his disappointing result from last week and chomping at the bit to make amends wasted no time putting Simon to the sword and take an early 2-0 lead. A little complacency creeped in on the 3rd before dominating the 4th and taking the 1st match to Whitby in record time.
With Hembo now Annoyed his opponent still hasn’t showed up its time to watch our comeback king Mike Rogers make his season debut against the forever present Jim Anderson. It’s fair to say he hasn’t lost any of his Thursday night squash head with perfect serves and instant boasts catching Jim out, he took an impressive 2-0 lead before demolishing him in the 3rd. I’d say he didn’t break a sweat but he does that just thinking about playing these days.
Whitby now 2-0 up and all going well except for Hembo who’s now in his Fuming stage that his partner hasn’t arrived focus moves to Dave v Stuart. Where do I begin with this one! Dave seemed to be forever only 1 shot away from winning the rallies which he absolutely controlled and dominated throughout. However that simple drop shot continued to allude Dave who’s shot always seemed to find Shaun’s racket who was only to obliging in taking the winning shot and taking the tie 3-1.
So 2-1 to Whitby and Hembo in his Furious stage at the fact Potts is still sat at home listening to Anya’s “Sail Away” with his yachting pals so has to watch Shaun face off against Rob. Shaun is the most Jakyll & Hyde squash player I think I’ve ever seen. The first game was Jakyll as Rob took charge without having to apply to much effort but then Jakyll must have warmed up and turned into Hyde and sent the ball into every corner of the court making Rob run like an African marathon runner just to stay in the game. With Rob looking exhausted and Hyde now 2-1 up Jakyll took charge and completely let Rob off the hook who was only too happy to take the 4th 11-6 and square the match. Shaun now with an opportunity to see the match out in Whitby’s favour became a bit of a Hybrid, sometimes Jakyll sometimes Hyde but unfortunately Jakyll appeared a little too much and Rob to his credit kept Neston in the match and made it 2-2.
Hembo now looking as if he’s about to have a Stroke (more of that to come) out of Anger at going on last finally gets on court against Potts. First game Hembo takes charge and it seems Potts is still lost at sea until he navigated his way back into the game and made it 1-1. Potts constantly finding Hembo between him and the ball made the sensible decision to ask the ref for a stroke or two or six and the non-bias Andy was only too happy to oblige. These strokes we used to devastating effect but for some reason when it was Hembo’s turn to ask he lost his voice and just tried to take the shot through his opponent. Potts takes the match to 2-1 and in the 4th game much of the same with Hembo digging deep to find a way to beat Potts & Andy who were like a dynamic duo at this stage with the strokes. Hembo forgetting that we play to 11 walks off court at 10-8 thinking he’s won before John finds him walking in the car park and drags him back on court, of course his last point was obviously a stroke to Potts. With great composure though Hembo nailed the return of serve to make it 2-2 and all the play for in the 5th. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be after a hard fought battle and the words “please ref” missing from Hembo’s vocabulary Potts took the 5th game and the match to Neston.
Well played back to the bar for some water vegetable broth that I wouldn’t feed my dog and sandwiches.
