Report

Report: Well Alderley Edge away, and Skipper Dave did the decent thing and drove the whole squad in the Team Bus…

Woolston were wanting another big win to keep up the momentum and promotion push.

So first on was birthday boy AGAIN Matt at 1. His opponent was ex world Surfing Champion, John, or thats what he wanted to put across with his Beach outfit! The lads thought it would be an easy win for Matt but I knew different, as anyone who wears denim shorts on a squash court must be bloody good! And John certainly was, bamboozling and off colour Matt with delicate lobs and top spin tennis drops. Matt soon found himself 2-0 down in quick time. But Braveheart Ian put him right with some inspired tips and Matt came roaring back, making John engage in longer rallies which eventually did the trick with Matt coming back for an impressive 3-2 win.

Next up and it was sick note Kelly, still complaining of a sore groin, doing something wrong I reckon. His opponent was at it from start with relentless hunting down of the ball… Pete quickly going 1-0 down. Then in a very close matched 2nd game controversy hit after a stroke ball. Christian completely blew his top, turning around and walking the ball at full pelt out of the court narrowly missing John Boy Finns head. Well done to Natalie for calming the situation and separating the players. Could have been very nasty but thankfully nobody hurt. But lets hope lesson learned in the future. To add insult to almost injury, Christian won the game 13-11. This incident seemed to take the wind out of Peter and he lost the 3rd easily. So 1-1

Next on and Ian looking to pull the lead back for Woolston. Well it started good for Ian taking a comfortable 2 games. But as by his own admission his engine is not fully up to speed yet, he looked like going to a 5 setter again when losing the 3rd. But tonight was his night and bamboozling racket skills saw Andrew shaking his head. With the match looking to be won Ian had the last laugh with his team mates, cheekily doing his roundhouse boast serve on match point to take the win… there is no keeping a good man down.

So could Dave take the match against a highly rated Natalie. With both payers sporting. A 100% record for the season with 7 wins something had to give. Well Natalie was cracking the ball sweetly and after a very close first game took the lead. Dave found his drop shot in the second to level it. It was a very tight affair, Natalie narrowly taking the 3rd 11-9, could Dave come back again. Well it looked on the cards with a game ball at 10-9, but he tinned the drop shot, but along came another chance at 11-11 and the same drop shot, but he missed again just clipping the tin. That was too many misses and it seemed to energise his opponent with Natalie squeezing the win and staying unbeaten.

It was now down to John Boy Finn to try and snatch the win for Woolston. He made his usual blistering start NOT, with a very lackadaisical performance losing easily. After some stern words from our site coach Ian, he seemed to find his va va room and stormed back to level. This seemed to give John the momentum and Amin never really threatened after that, with John taking a 3-1 victory. The points narrowly went to Woolston, but a tremendous match and very tight.

Fantastic and very generous hospitality from Alderley 4 and we look forward to returning the compliment in the New Year.

Oh and £ in comp was a roll over with John and Ian level on points conceded so its a bumper £10 in next week at home to the Woolston 2nds!
