Report

Report: Week 3 and another tough fixture for The Old Bastards. This time in the shape of Crewe Vagrants 3, a big strong club capable of putting out a very strong 3rd team.

First on was John "Boy" Finn, and he looked in confident mood whilst smouldering on the balcony before the match. It continued on court with a powerful display steam rollering Rennie in the first 2 games. Game three and John was up 9-1, but he did his traditional thing of switching off the gas, bad move with Rennie getting back to a nervous 10-8. Thankfully this time John grabbed the11th point for a comfortable 3-0 win...
Matt was up next and was suffering from a trapped nerve in his neck... could he play thru? Well the first 2 games seemed like it, with his usual deep drives followed up with a deft boast or drop, Steve was always in the game but was forced into costly errors. But to be fair he really dug in during the 3rd game and one particularly long rally did for him to go down 11-9. A long break in between games seemed to rejuvenate Matt in the 4th though and the points were his 11-5.
So Pete was at 2 this week as Skipper Dave had been suffering both a tight hamstring and a heavy cold all week. Could he win the match for The Woolston crew. Well Mike had other ideas, and was a whirling dervish around the court, Pete literally didn't know what hit him. A bit of calming down in the interval and a rethink about tactics saw him come back to level the match in comfortable fashion. But it was to be a brief respite and a good pasting in the 3rd 2-11 seemed to take away his stuffing and on paper the 4th looked close but Pete was emotionally and physically cooked. So the champagne was put on ice for now.
Ian our ferocious Highlander making his debut after injury was in the mood. But Gareth looked to be his match in tight first game which Ian scraped home in. But Gareth returned the favour in the second so all square 1-1. Ian gradually got the measure of Gareth, with some superb powerful cross court drives with delay that caught out his opponent several times, eventually with one of them being the match winner in the 4th game. So points and match in the bag well done Ian, great debut for Woolston Old Bastards.
Could skipper Dave finish off the night and get the 3 extra points. Well no chance according to the way he was soundly thrashed in the first 2 games with a deft boast by Martin several times. A touch of inspirational coaching from last years skipper John boy finn did the trick with Dave slowing the game down and using the trademark backhand drop shot to good effect to get level from the jaws of defeat. Although he didn't know at the time but Martin later said he was physically finished for the 5th game and Dave managed to turn around a seemingly disastrous defeat into 3 good bonus points for the Old Boys.
4-1 win in the end but it was a much tighter match than that in reality, cracking nights squash. And congratulations to John winning his first £ in comp of the season!
