Report

Report:local derbies do not come any more competitive than this and with Rugby Club 2 and Rugby Club 4 triumphing over CCO 2 and CCO 4 respectively at hare lane, this was the jewel in the crown.

once again, absent friends could have made up a stonking good Divi 2 team but those that were available put on a show.

willo and caddy were ready and raring to get said show on the road but apparently Charlie needed to play and go. not a booty call but just an early start in the morning so being the gentlemen that we are caddy and I graciously let Charlie and Nick play first.

the warm up was played at a hell of a pace with willo nervously checking his bag to ensure spare balls would be available. the game followed the same frenetic pace with Charlie taking control and the first two games. Nick regained his composure to be 8-4 up and back in the game but a missed drop shot no more than a racket length away from the wall and a massive momentum swing found Charlie 10-8 up and serving for the match. but match balls were squandered, Nick capitalised and the away crowd were sensing a comeback, Superb squash and great entertainment and another game that could have gone either way with Charlie eventually converting his eighth match ball to put the hosts one up and him off for a quick shower and a speedy exit.

for a slim chap, Lewis has appears to have a hefty posterior which he uses to good effect in controlling the 'T' and forcing frosty to treat him as a roundabout. However, frosty negotiated this obstacle well and like Charlie took control of the first two games. Like Charlie match ball was squandered in the third but Frosty suffered an injury to his ankle chasing a lost cause and may have rested in the fourth or maybe Lewis was just too good, as Prince would say.

Frosty started the fifth brightly, before lewis forged ahead survived a Frosty comeback and held on to draw the visitors level and Charlie was still around.

it's been a while since willo and caddy have crossed swords, long enough for willo to have forgotten how devious and deft Dave's drops can be as Dave took complete control of the first three games with the front of the court becoming a forbidden territory for willo.

A spirited fightback by willo and another quick game of after you, no after you nobody wants to win it eventually saw willo win the third in overtiime. Dave had little answer to willo's wily old tippy, tappy, slowly, slowly catchy monkey squash in the fourth and the match was level. nip and tuck in the early exchanges before willo got ahead and stayed ahead to put the hosts ahead. Charlie was still around and had marked this match.

Graham and carl have played many, many times and this was also a complete contrast of styles and again one player dominated the first two games before being pegged back in the third and pushed to the limit in the third but Graham dug deep and held on to secure a win, the bonus points and regain a little pride for CCO and Charlie was still around.

and so to the 'dead rubber' actually anything but. the match on the other court had finished so a raucuos mix of CCO, CRUFC & Whitby players crowded the balcony to watch Joe and Tougmudder duke it out. Joe having lost little of the expertise that used to grace Divi one. Toughmudder showing true grit and determination but Joe just seemed to step away at critical moments and take the spoils.

wonderful to see Gareth Burroughes on the other court bringing his unique style of squash to CCO and meaning that the majority of ex Nuffield players are still 'treading the boards' in new clubs.

off to the bar for Kam Xin chinese and Charlie was still around so let's hope it's not your tax return he's processing at 6am in the morning :0)
