Report: | And we’re back!! Before we start big shout out to our team mate Luke and his missus Jess on the birth of their beautiful daughter Penelope! Just when you were starting to play well Luke hahaha
Back to business and its time to play host to our local peers Brooks Hotels and up first was the returning Dave against Brooks stalwart John. Dave who hasn’t picked up a racket for some time now is coming back just when we need him most and the time away from court was certainly showing in the first as John rolled back the years and pilled the pressure on Dave who had to rely on a tie break to get over the line. Soon enough Dave bounced back to his old self and took control of the tie to comfortably win 3-0 and get Whitby off to a flyer.
Next on was Hembo v Whitby old boy Sam. Sam with his power is always a threat and with Hembo only having the use of 1 ear (in case you’re the one person left in the world who he hasn’t told) an upset may have been on the cards. Thankfully Hembo made Sam play down the left side of the court so he could hear where the ball was apparently he plays with his eyes closed these days. Credit where credits due, Hembo made light work of what could have been a tricky opponent and eased to a 3-0 win.
So, 2 up and time for John to get on the Bus and redeem himself. John was paying Dave as much respect as possible having been caught out by his style of play in the past and wasn’t going to waste any time making his mark on the game. Straight from the off the tempo was set to high and Dave was put under pressure from start to finish with John taking the volleys early and covering every bit of court (injury? What injury). John was like the bus in Speed whilst Dave was like one of those City Seekers with no roof going about 5 miles an hour taking it all in. Very un-Dave like more like Cyril Blakey but John was not complaining and wasted no time On The Buses to put the match to bed 3-0. Time for more Codine hope I don't get piss tested.
So the spoils go to Whitby and time for Shaun (who like all the other blue noses was still celebrating scrapping a draw at home with all the help from the officials against the Mighty Reds) to take on Chris. The words from Chris when he saw who he was up against is abbreviated to oh FFS! Shaun quickly got his game in full swing playing his typically smooth no panic lobs and drops and led 2-0 before, like Michael Oliver, completely switched off and didn’t do his job properly. Thankfully unlike VAR Shaun did his job and put the tie to bed in the 4th before celebrating in front of the travelling Brook Hotel fans on the balcony.
So last tie of the night and its Charlie v Jamie, time for everyone to run down and grab a pint and be entertained by the 2 people who know how to actually play this game. It was a decent spectacle mainly due to Charlie carrying a bit of an injury allowing Jamie to force him into breaking a sweat. Charlie was always in control but Jamie never went down without a fight and the balcony was enjoying what was on show, 2 good players playing good squash. Eventually the inevitable happened and Charlie ensured Whitby got the Max 20 points we needed to keep the pressure on Chester and to set up the tie of the season in 2 weeks time.
Time for beers and tinned curry & rice at the bar ensuring a few sore heads this morning for Hembo and our amazing fans & supports who I hope never have to put up with likes of Dacoure 😊
