Report: | Well ski trip is over and we swap the cold and chilly weather of the mountains to our cold and chilly squash courts at our beloved Whitby, hosting Moss Farm.
After losing ground last week with a severely depleted squad Matt was up first looking to get some points back on the board for us and he started off like a man on a mission completely taking Jem out the game and dominating play. Jem’s been around long enough and seen it all before so wasn’t fazed and held his nerve in the 2nd and then applied the pressure in the 3rd making it a dicey match on the line. Up steps the Whitby balcony to feed Matt the encouragement he needed and thrived on to get him over the line in the tie break and take it to the wire. Matt played some great squash sending the ball deep to the back of the court and made life difficult for Jem who facing 4 match balls sent the balcony quiet and Matt’s bum turned into a rabbit’s nose. Finally, after defending 3 of them he succumbed and deservedly Matt put all 3 points in the bank for Whitby.
Up next was Charlie v Chris. This match was all about the first game. After a brief worrying knock to the knew a disoriented Charlie looked like he still had his ski’s on and Chris took full advantage being in the right place at the right time and managing an impressive 9 points before Charlie clicked into gear to see out the game. The next 2 games was more business as usual with Charlie comfortably putting the match to bed 3-0.
Next on was a very dry, on the wagon Hembo v Gary and with no balcony beers to egg him on it was down to his step son Ben who was rightly impressed with what he saw. Hembo didn’t seem to have missed a step and looked fitter than he did pre 7 days of Apre Ski moving around the court well and taking the ball early putting the pressure on Gary and forcing a few mistakes. Gary hung in there for the 1st 2 games but ultimately Hembo only got better and eased to a 3-0 win and bagging the bonus points for Whitby.
Next on and the match of the night was Joe v Paul. Unbelievably close game in the first as both players adapt to the cold environment of court 1 with Joe edging it in the tie break. Next game had everything as well with Joes drop shot slice letting him down Paul was always in it. Finally, Joe managed to impose his game a bit more and kept Paul stretching and running to the back of the court and finally got over the line.
Last on was Shaun returning from Mexico versus Keith. What can I say about this match other than it had the whole balcony in dreamland, literally Zzzzz. The serve drop squash imposed by Keith it must be said is a weapon, as when it works, it makes you want to quit squash altogether not to mention his running commentary. The hardest part of marking the game is staying awake. Shaun however had the answer, which was to serve him back a dose of his own medicine and he could do it better (wish I knew that ☹). Shaun played Keith at his own game and took a ball at the end of Joe and Pauls game that was warmer than the sunny beaches he’s been sipping pina colada's on last week to being as cold as the rivers where all the Austrian Mountain Salmon swim in. Either way who cares it worked and helped get that game over with which did the balcony a favour.
So Max points in the bag to help make up for last week and a quiet one in the bar tonight for Whitby and we continue to try and sober up from a week of debauchery and Salmon fishing. Good night. G.A.G?
