Report: | With Christmas and New Year firmly in the rear view mirror the 2nd half of the season arrives at the typically ice box courts of Whitby.
Braving the conditions on and off court were Chester 4 who fielded a stronger outfit than they have recently.
First on and eager as ever was Hembo v Drew. Looked clear sailing for Hembo in this one and took a commanding lead before failing to close and allowing Drew to make the score look respectable. He went one better the next 2 games with Hembo constantly failing to look behind and playing the ball back to his opponent. The marker fearing the worst of spending a week with Hembo fuming about getting beat need not have worried as he finally kicked in to gear and put the ball high taking away the power of Drew’s shots and putting the match to bed.
Next on court was first team debutant Fletch up against Rich. Fletch took the step up smoothly and his playing style certainly more than useful in Div 4 went 1 up in the 1st and was unlucky not to nab the 2nd. A dominant display in the 3rd made the balcony think it was all but over before Rich came out swinging and benefitting from a few contentious decisions, where’s VAR when you need it. Match tightly poised now at 2 all and fearing this could be the first L on his record Fletch showed his team mates what he’s made off and put Rich out of his misery capping off a very decent display. Well done mate.
Next on was John taking on the up and coming Salah (he’s only 12 ffs). Salah certainly knows how to hit a ball and unfortunately for John doesn’t need any time to warm his joints up and took the 1st with ease. John accepting this isn’t babysitting duties and he has 3 points to get in the bag for Whitby warmed himself up and started putting the pressure on Salah taking the 2nd and surviving 5 game points to take the 3rd. Salah needed to compose himself and quick as John’s place on the Whitby Ski trip was threatened which turned out to be more than enough motivation to put the match to bed in the 4th and the points go to Whitby before 8pm. John picked up his pin t whilst Salah picked up his Beeno Comics. I do not want to play this kid when he’s not a kid ☹.
So, with the points in the bag and Hembo still showing off his new one of Santa it was time for Charlie to take on Jimmy. Imagine playing on a court with waterfalls on the sidewalls and you’ll know what it’s like for Jimmy, add to that taking on the divisions top player it wasn’t going to be easy for him by any stretch. Jimmy could muster a hand full of good shots but it was always going to be too much of a struggle and Charlie wasted no time putting the squash to bed and getting himself in Ski mode, the cold courts help us with that at least.
Last up was new club favourite Joe experiencing Whitby Winter Wonderland court 1 for the first time against Emily. Joe was really struggling with ball dynamics in low temperatures whist Emily who’s a teacher at trade figured this out, you have to hit the ball harder Joe haha. This was the match of the night really with Emily to her credit playing some good squash and Joe having to dig deep to avoid a weird situation back at home for his missus. Tied at 2-2 it really could have gone either way which is probably what Joe was hoping Angelina might be do later. Finally, Joe was able to take 2 crucial points and take the win.
Right then, off the bar and see you on the slopes, well played Chester was nice having you’s.
