Report: | T’was the last match before Christmas at Whitby and party mood was on show but the little matter of Heswall 5 would have to be dealt with before the celebrations could begin.
Both teams at home meant only 1 court each so early starters Charlie and Colin got proceedings underway. Charlie wasn’t quite in the Christmas mood on court and wasn’t prepared to gift Colin anything controlling the rallies and taking the match in 13 minutes. Sorry Colin we’ll have to make it up to you in the bar.
Annoyed that his playing partner was late (its still only 6:45 at this stage) Hembo was ready to get going v’s Dave who got the memo regarding the Christmas Jumper !! 😊 Well Done. Hembo started very sluggishly, all the deep-fried batter coated mars bars he’d been eating in Scotland all week was showing and Dave deserved to be in the lead before Hembo heard Charlies beer bottle open and decided enough was enough and started to play properly. Dave wouldn’t go down without a valiant effort in the 2nd coming close to taking the game before Hembo put it to bed 3-0 and started the celebration which still haven’t finished for him at 11:30 the next day!!! What an animal, hahaha different breed you mate.
Up next and stepping in to the 1st team due to Dave and Joe’s absence was Matt taking on Pete Astbury love child PVB. The knock up was misleading as Matt took the game to Peter applying a lightning speed tempo and pinning him o the back of the court serving up his 1st New York Finest Bagel. That kind of pressure and dominance couldn’t last and Peter tried to make a game of it in the next 2 but Matt still trying to get a sesame seed out of his teeth didn’t let up and sealed victory for the 2nd week in a row for Whitby.
Next up and fresh from Tanerriffe was the Red Skull aka John Ham taking on the hard-hitting Mike Hooper. John was full of gifts for his playing partner in the 1st game constantly hitting the ball back to him and allowing Mike to take an early deserved lead. John however started to see red then realised he was looking in a mirror and just needed to chill out a bit, easier said than done when ya face is on fire! John did mange to switch up the play on court and slowed the ball down leaving Mike to act as Santa now and provide John with the gifts levelling up the score. The next 2 games were more comfortable and controlled allowing John to take significant leads and waiting out match point for Mike to hand the game to him ensuring it was going to be a Red Christmas for John Ham’s face at least.
Final call on court before the celebration could get into full swing was Shaun v Jason. The first game had everything and could have gone either way with Shaun’s perfect lobs proving to be the difference. This continued in the next 2 games and Jason struggled to find an answer meaning it was the full 20 points that were being awarded meaning it was a Christmas #1 for The Whitby Boys!
Time to get the well-earned party started in the bar. Some great efforts this season by all the boys well done we deserve to be top. Decent food and festive Cheeseboards and meat platters for our guests who were great sports on the night. Christmas darts, shots of Port countless pints of beer some amazing Christmas outfits and laughs all round. What a club we are !!
Merry Christmas NWCSL see you for the 2nd half in the new year
