Report: | Off to the bar for a beer and some cucumber sandwiches
Away Report
Boys on tour tonight as The Whitby lads travel to early table toppers Tattenhall for a 1st v 2nd showdown.
Whitby expecting to see a bit more youth in their opponents we’re thrilled to be greeted by stalwarts like Salty, Henshall and Parkes but with the like of Fred and Liam bringing their average age down by a few decades it was no time to become complacent!
First on was Mark & John who can still remember letting a 2-0 lead slip away from him the last time they played. I could already hear Kerriannes voice in my head saying please not again ffs! She need not have worried as John pinned Mark to the back of the court and even 10-6 down in the 2nd game wasn’t going to let Mark have a sniff and made it 2-0 in the tie break. Mark had nothing left in the tank and John made sure it was a good start for the visitors took the match 3-0 and beer in hand straight away.
Next on was Tim v Hembo which on paper suggested it should be a close encounter and Tim, taking an early lead in the first had Hembo worried. With Andrea already expecting Nige’s child the alimony payments for 18 years was enough to trigger a response and Hembo took charge of the match frustrating Tim in to a more physical tactic which wasn’t supported by the marker who made Tim extremely angry. Hope they kissed and made up in the end. Hembo blocked out the theatrics and stuck to the task taking the match 3-0 and 2-0 up for Whitby.
Time to turn the screw as young upcoming star Liam took on the unstoppable Charlie. All looked like business as usual for Charlie in the first before someone showed Liam the poster of Pip that’s doing the rounds. That’s the rumour I heard anyway. Suddenly there was an adolescent spring in Liam’s step who pushed Charlie into more mistakes than we’ve seen him make over the last 2 years taking the 2nd game. That was enough of a scare for Charlie and his newly wed who went out all guns blazing in the next 2 games taking the match 3-1 and securing the bonus points for Whitby. Sorry Liam that Poster will have to do for now, maybe next year?????
With the match won for Whitby up next was Craig taking on our beloved Shaun who’s confidence is flying now. Craig wanted to put a dent in that and punished the unusually lose Shaun who couldn’t get the widths and lengths right and took the first comfortably. A quick pep talk and a solid away balcony boosted the moral of Shaun who sorted out his shots and used the ferocious supporting away fans to speer him on. Even when we were told to be quiet the whispers of “Shaun, Shaun, Shuan” still reached him and he rolled back the years for a very impressive win taking the game 3-1 and 4-0 to Whitby. Is it going to be a whitewash?
Next up is future superstar Fred v Tattenhall old boy soon to be Whitby Legend Joe. Despite an impressive amount of ground being covered by Fred it looked as though the experience and expertise of Joe was going to prove to big a challenge for the youngster as joe went 1-0 up. Little did we know that Fred not only has talent but he has an even better attitude and dusted himself off superbly and took the fight to Joe. Youth was certainly playing his part as Fred just didn’t stop retrieving and kept forcing Joe into mistakes levelled the match 1-1. Quick injury break for Joe proved futile as Fred flew around the court like he was on skates and played shots we mortals can only dream of. He was a pleasure to watch and deserved his victory taking the match 3-1 and sparing Tattenhalls blushes. Maybe it was a poster of Angela doing the rounds?
Whoever said Tattenhall was all Cucumber sandwhiches and Earl Grey tea needs shooting haha. Amazing food at the bar, amazing facilities and amazing host particularly Mark who stayed till the very end after the kids had gone to bed. Charlie & Joe why ever did you leave !
